In case I had forgotten at some point that I am, actually, an American, the past few days of my life have been proof enough to remind me that I come from the land of stars and stripes. Take, Exhibit A: Vienna. Walking through Vienna, all of a sudden, I saw a Starbucks. AND I SWEAR TO YOU I HEARD ANGELS SINGING. And, don’t you dare judge me, because you have no idea how annoying it is to not be able to get a damn coffee to-go in Italy when one of your favorite things on the planet was holding a huge cup of coffee when it’s cold out. (And, if you CAN relate to that, then can I get an AMEN! about seeing a Starbucks!?)
I ordered myself a Venti Vanilla Latte, paid absolutely way too much for it and skipped along Vienna like a little kid who just got a whole bunch of Halloween candy and was totally allowed to eat it. Basically, heaven. Who cares if the coffee wasn’t good or that it doesn’t even slightly compare to Italian espresso? I CARE SO LITTLE, because that damn Venti latte warmed my hands so much, I DIDN’T EVEN NEED GLOVES. I paid €5 for warmth and to look like a total yuppie while walking around downtown Vienna. So? We all have our vices. This, clearly, is mine.
Oh, wait.
I said “vices,” didn’t I? Yeah, because my other one, is far more expensive.
It’s called, “In which Jamie Varon must go into every H&M she sees and BUY EVERYTHING.” Coats, scarves, dresses, jackets, gloves, almost everything in my suitcase is straight from European H&M. I HAVE A PROBLEM. I KNOW.
And, this problem is only going to get worse because on December 6, I move on over to London. Yes, London is my next stop. And, I know I’m going to be so freezing I am probably going to want to DIE, but I don’t even care because London is so POSH. And, I think I describe London as being posh because of the Spice Girls, which is so lame, but not even important right now.
ANYWAYS.
Yes, London. Apparently, this is where the shopping is. Forget Paris or Milan (unless you are a size two, have money to blow, and want to look like a runway model, no thanks), it’s all about London (baby!). [Side note: If you know what I am referencing with, "London, baby!" and you are a male, marry me?]
Where was I?
Oh, yes, my incurable shopping habit only to get worse by going to London and WANTING TO BUY EVERYTHING IN SIGHT SO I CAN LOOK POSH AND COOL ENOUGH TO LIVE IN LONDON. I’m succumbing to the pressures of materialism. I’m becoming MORE AMERICAN by LEAVING AMERICA.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
I’M SO ASHAMED.
Ok, I’m being dramatic. I’ll admit that. Just, promise me you won’t judge me for basically kneeling in front of a Starbucks like it was my savior and for having a shopping addiction that is only going to get worse before it gets any better?
I don’t need YOUR judgment. I HAVE MY OWN TO DEAL WITH.

Boddingtons! *High Five* (this will either make complete sense or none whatsoever)
makes complete sense!! LONDON BABY!! hahaha, i love Friends
OMG! When you’re in London, good luck trying NOT to buy anything at Top Shop. That’s all I have to say. Hold onto your wallet
I can totally relate to this experience. When I was traveling in St. Petersburg, Russia, myself and the group I was with fell head over heels with McDonalds. Not for the food, but for the Kimberly Clark brand toilet paper. Yes, toilet paper. Good luck surviving London!
We happily ate at McDonalds in Bangkok. Happily. Blissfully. Righteously.
Would that have been a “Friends” reference or the later by Austin Powers?
good times Jamie, keep it up!
Logan
Definitely a Friends reference. A few commenters above got it!
Groovy, baby! Let’s take a ride in my shaguar.
I’ve been to Starbucks and in almost every country I’ve visited. Mostly it was because I was trying to escape drinking more NesCafe… even in Turkey, so much NesCafe everywhere and they have frickin’ Turkish coffee!
When I was in Italy, I was once so homesick I went to McDonald’s and ordered a Big Mac and I cried, I CRIED, it was so good.
Also, at another point I was starved to read something in English I went to a newstand and paid 10 euro for a Newsweek in English… in it I read a review for Before Sunset, which I saw pretty much as soon as I got home and it set me on another love affair with traveling the world. Dammit.
In other words, you are not alone! Enjoy the latte.
…ordered a Big Mac and I cried, I CRIED, it was so good.
HAHA! I’m so glad I’m not alone in this…
Ahh!! Have fun in London. I was having European adventures all of last year and am TOTALLY jealous now. Because I miss it so darn much. I didn’t get to go to Italy though, so jealous.
Anyway, London is amaaaazing. I agree with you that it’s completely posh. It’s awesome. Also, Primark all the way (and New Look’s pretty good too) for cheap clothes!
I love reading about your adventures! Did they have any exclusive items on the menu at Starbucks? Enjoy London, and I second Grace, TopShop just may be better (and more addicting) than H&M!
You better stop the addictive shopping or else you won’t be able to afford yourself and trips around the world..secondly you can’t take all that stuff with you when you travel. BEST ADVICE: Get a good coat becasue when it is cold no-one ever sees what you have on anyway. And do not buy expensive trendy stuff. If you have the urge, get inexpensive trendy stuff that looks expensive and be very choosy with your purchases always. Clothes shopping can be addictive but traveling is much more fun. Plus no-one sees you everyday so you can easily wear an outfit twice to three times a week and change it up..different scarf..change a necklace, different cardigan ect. And you can do all of this and look posh in LONDON!!!
Love, KILLJOY
Mom – jeeeeeeez. You know I only buy inexpensive clothes! I’m not like Keith and Nick who buy $250 jeans. Gimme a $25 dress and I’m good to go.
Yes, you are a killjoy, but being very motherly. Thank you.
When I am in a city where English is not the local language, I always start my day at the nearest Starbucks, if I am lucky to find one. It looks the same on the inside as every Starbucks in the states. I’m in nice familiar surroundings, with some comforting American-type-latte-thing, armed with my map. After that, I am ready to tackle the city. Amen to your search for Starbucks!
Then in London you’ll feel at home. Starbuck’s are E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E.
And about H&M..yes…H&M is an addiction.
Never had the Zara or Mango experience?
Let me know if the Whistle Stop is still there in Victoria Station. Wait, maybe Victoria Station is gone – naw that couldn’t be. I tended bar there before Starbucks was even dreamed of, before the Big Mac had crossed the ocean, before . . .
London, posh? I’m afraid if you’ve come to that conclusion then you’ve only scraped the surface.
Venture further than zone 1 and you’ll be in London.
Try Brick Lane on a Sunday.
White Hart Lane stadium on a Saturday.
And if you’re really daring, Deptford market on a wednesday

I’ve been to London and it’s POSH! Sure, there are shitty areas around it, but overall, it’s pretty awesome.
Great YT vid. Thanks for posting it… “Mary Fucking Poppins” was the best part. Clearly.
Amen! I freaking love Starbucks. I just moved to a different state and the first thing on my list was to find the closest Starbucks. There’s even one in the grocery store which will make going there less dreadful!
Enjoy your latte!
How are you moving from country to country so easily? Don’t you have to have work visas or something, or is that irrelevant since you work for yourself?
My love muffin is all about the Starbucks, so I kind of get where you’re coming from. And mittens will never be as warm as holding a cup of hot cocoa!
Couldn’t agree more about the Starbucks. I lived in Paris for awhile, and as wonderful as all the sidewalk cafes with their espressos and cafe cremes were, sometimes I wanted nothing more than to wander down those wonderful Parisian streets sipping a nice, tall cappuccino.
Glad to see you are enjoying your European adventures and finding the little bits of home that keep away the homesickness
I’m so looking forward to you hitting these shores Jamie – I’ll be delighetd to show you a couple of my favourite places in the city. And London before Christmas has a great buzz to it.
London baby!
Nothing matters more than that we feel good.
